From the soaring peaks of the High Atlas Mountains, to the glorious sand dunes of the desert, Morocco is certainly an adventurer’s dream. This slice of North Africa is carpeted with heart-stirring landscapes – reminiscent of something you might find in one of the many souks you will experience on your desert Morocco adventure.

Cascades d’Ouzoud
I bet you didn’t expect there to be waterfalls in Morocco – well there are! The stunningly beautiful multi-tiered Cascades d’Ouzoud is one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech, as this natural idyll also features cafes and stalls along its paths as well.
Don’t forget to bring your camera – you will get some fabulous pictures. If you visit the Cascades in the summer you may be able to swim in a pool at the bottom, or take a boat ride to get closer to the falls (although you will get wet!)
Erg Chebbi
The Erg Chebbi desert is like nowhere else on earth. Reaching heights of over 525 feet, and covering 17 miles from North to South, this great expanse of sand is extremely scenic. From the flat and rocky hard packed desert to the rose-gold sand dunes that rise above it, everywhere you turn there is something beautiful to see.
If you’re lucky enough to be on luxury Morocco tours at sunset then prepare for your mind to be blown by the beautiful shades of purple, pink and orange you will experience.
Erg Chigaga
Not to be confused with Erg Chebbi, Erg Chigaga does not contain a single sand dune – it is, instead, a long stretch of golden sand which goes as far as the eye can see (about 25 miles!) Bordered on both sides by mountain ridges, the best way to explore Erg Chigaga is by camel – just like in the movies.
Due to the fact that there are no tall dunes, just small crescents, the desert experience here tends to be quiet and enveloping. The night sky with its display of the best of the Milky Way is also not to be missed.
Gouffre de Friouato
Morocco is a country of great extremes, just like this deep cavern with potentially the most extensive cave system. The cavern itself is 775 feet deep, and you can get right to the bottom down a set of quite arduous steps. Once you have reached the bottom, squeeze yourself into one or two of the dark but extraordinarily beautiful chambers that are full of breath-taking formations.
Gouffre de Friouato roughly translates as “the chasm of the wind” and you should take a warm jacket with you if you intend on exploring, as it can get quite cold there. The caves are also home to a family of bats, so it’s not an excursion for the squeamish.
High Atlas Mountains
This is the highest mountain range in North Africa, known as “Idraren Draren” by the Berbers and is perfect for hiking from spring to autumn. With a range of 625 miles, its jagged peaks act as the perfect barrier to the weather from the hot Sahara desert in the South and the milder Mediterranian climate of the North.
Iriqui National Park
Morocco’s largest national park, Iriqui spans just under 304,000 acres, and was created in 1994 with the aim of trying to protect the biodiversity of the region. It is around 55 miles from Marrakech, and you can spot migratory birds if you are lucky enough to visit this area of savannah, salt flats and wetlands.
Jebel Toubkal
Jebel Toubkal is the name of the highest mountain in Africa, 13761 feet to be exact. Located in the heart of the Toubkal national park it is easy to reach from Marrakech and requires only a reasonable degree of fitness to experience its lush valleys, mountain scenery and friendly Berber communities.
Oualidia
Oualidia is renowned for being home to some of the best seafood in Morocco and the scenery is pretty awesome too. Golden sands line a crescent-shape lagoon that is lined with a rocky breakwater. It’s a great spot for nature lovers too as it is home to egrets, flamingos and terns in spring and autumn.
Plage Sauvage
This truly wild beach featuring caves and cliffs, set two and a half miles from Mirleft, is perfect for surfing – although it is only accessible down a set of steps. It has a low-key chilled out kind of vibe and is safe to swim, and there are lots of little cafes where you can enjoy freshly cooked Moroccon food.
Rif Mountains
The Rif mountains are the most northerly mountains in Morocco, and stretch 200km alongside the Mediterranian – making for some enjoyable and interesting walking. You are likely to experience many different types of weather while hiking here, so always take layers with you. There are plenty of stalls along the way, if you want to grab a drink or a bite to eat.
