Top Ten Travel Tips for Morocco
#Tip One: What to pack for travelling to Morocco
All you really need when you travel to Morrocco is things that are easy to layer, such as t-shirts, shirts, shorts and trousers. If you want to respect the Moroccan culture then you should pack clothing that is modest, and keeps your shoulders covered – that way you won’t cause offence to anyone unknowingly.
Don’t worry if you forget this tip though. The shopping in Morocco is fantastic, and you will have plenty of opportunities to purchase a scarf or sarong, that you can drape over your shoulders if needed.
Don’t forget to pack these essentials too:
- Summer – sunscreen and a sun hat
- Winter – woolly hat, thick socks and a packable jacket
Tip Two: Lose yourself in the streets of Marrakech
Marrakech is famous for its food and wonderful architecture, as it was once home to Moroccan royalty. You can spend hours wondering the maze-like streets and discovering the many souks packed full of wonderful products you can buy, end your day in the great square of Jemaa-el-Fna – it really comes alive at night.
Tip Three: Take in the beauty of the Ouzoud Waterfall
Get away from the city for a day, and head on out to the Ouzoud Waterfall in the Atlas Mountains. This stunning feat of nature in located near the village of Tanaghmeilt – and is definitely worth the 150km trip. You will also have the chance to see some beautiful Berber villages on your way to the waterfall. Don’t forget to pack your swimming costume too!
Tip Four: Ride a camel in the Sahara Desert
No luxury tour of Morocco would be complete without the chance to ride a camel in the Sahara Desert. The majority of our Desert tours here at Hasina Morocco Tours include a dromedary camel ride amongst the shifting sands of the desert – giving you plenty of chance to get that perfect shot!
Tip Five: Explore the Blue Village – Chefchaouen
One of the stops on our popular “City and Desert” tour, Chefchaouen is known as the blue pearl, and is a photographer’s paradise! 60 km south of Tangier, and nestled in the Rif mountains, the blue-washed buildings of this city are a sight you won’t see anywhere else in the world. A truly wonderful place to visit, providing travellers with a respite from some of the other more bustling places, it really does have a relaxing feel to it as well.
Tip Six: Visit the bustling capital of Morocco – Rabat
Rabat is literally translated as “fortified palace” and this city is the cultural and political heart of Morocco. Located on the North-West Atlantic coast, this often-overlooked part of Morocco really shows off its Islamic and French-Colonial Heritage in places such as the Hassan Tower and the Kasbah des Oudaias.
Tip Seven: Relax on the beaches of Essaouira
One of the places we visit on our “Authentic Morocco” tour, Essaouira is an old fishing village which has become a popular spot for surfers and water sports fans – as well as tourists who want a break from the city life. Essaouira is much smaller than Marrakech and so the medina is much easier to navigate, giving you plenty of chance to hone your bartering skills!
Tip Eight: Wander through Ait Benhaddou
If you want to visit the UNESCO world heritage site Ait Benhaddou, then you need to book our “Morocco Gorge” tour. This beautiful Kasbah is located on an old Berber caravan route and was used as a filming location for many blockbusters, such as Ben Hur, The Gladiator and The Mummy.
Tip Nine: Try some Cous Cous with your meal
Cous Cous is a fine wheat pasta that originated in Morocco and is typically eaten with meat or vegetable stew. Muslim Moroccan’s tend to roll it by hand on their holy day (Friday) or eat it on special occasions, but you should be able to find it in most cafés and restaurants.
Tip Ten: Treat your tastebuds to a Tagine
Even if you have no experience of Moroccan food, you will probably have seen a tagine, a domed clay pot – but the name is also given to the food inside it as well. Tagines are basically slow-cooked stews made of beef, lamb or chicken with vegetables, and are often served with cous cous.
