You may not realise it just yet, but Morocco is the ideal place for a summer holiday if you are looking for the ultimate luxury family holiday. Morocco is one of the most child-friendly countries in the world – children and family have a real soft spot in any Moroccan’s heart, and the people here will go out of their way to make you all feel welcome.
If you are in charge of the family holiday plans in your household, then you would make a very wise choice by booking a cheap luxury holiday with Hasina Morocco Tours.
Why is Morocco so popular with families?
For those of us with a touch of adventure in our hearts, Morocco is an ideal gateway to the rest of the African continent – a charming introduction shall we say. It also has one of the most diverse climates in the world as well, allowing you to experience both skiing and a trip to the beach on the same day, sometimes!
Morocco is made up of sixty provinces which are divided into 16 regions, with every area having its own vast list of family-friendly activities – from camel trekking, cooking classes, hot air balloon rides over the desert, market tours, quad biking, and even sand skiing – there really is something for everyone. The ever-changing landscape with its mountain ranges, desert dunes, historic cities and jewel lined coast is bound to entrance any member of your family as well.
Visiting Morocco with kids
Morocco is a pretty safe place to visit overall. As with any other tourist destination, you should be aware of petty crimes like bag snatching and pick pocketing in busy areas such as the souks. You may well be targeted by people with monkeys in the main squares as well – they tend to quickly snap your picture and then demand money from you. The henna ladies may also try to grab your hands to paint them too, and then demand money. There may also be people trying to pester you to buy other things as well, but usually a firm ‘no thank you’ should be enough to put them off.
The food in Morocco is really tasty and most of it is safe to eat as well. There are lots of fantastic restaurants all over Morocco, but it is always wise to do a little bit of research first. The most common dish found in Morocco is the tagine – which is a couscous-based dish featuring lamb or chicken, dried fruit, spices and vegetables, cooked in a covered tagine dish.
If this sounds a bit too exotic for you, then don’t worry, you should be able to find plenty of grilled meat available and bread of course. It’s probably best to steer clear fruit that you haven’t peeled yourself or vegetables that aren’t cooked. Tap water is meant to be safe to drink in Morocco but if you’re not sure, then it may be worthwhile taking some sort of travel filter system with you.
Visiting the desert with kids
Any visit to the Sahara Desert will offer your family an unforgettable experience, but there are some things you should keep in mind before you book.
It’s a long journey. It’s a very long drive from Fez to Erg Chiraga, about 482 km in fact. You obviously won’t be doing that all-in-one go, but there will be plenty of hours spent in the car so it is wise to be prepared.
The scenery you will see on the journey though, makes it all worthwhile. Not only will you experience panoramic views of High Atlas Mountains and fertile valleys beneath, but you will also get glimpses of another way of life in the Berber villages. However, if your children are young you may want to pack some things to keep them entertained.
Talking of entertainment, your technology is not going to work in the desert, so thinking about using your smart phone or tablet to keep your child entertained is not going to cut it. Be prepared by packing things such as notepads, crayons, small books, card games, or you could even try a game of eye-spy!
What is the must-pack items?
The must pack item list for parents is probably going to be very similar, whichever country you are visiting, but it is always worthwhile keeping it in mind so that you don’t forget anything that might turn out to be vital.
You should be able to fit all of this in a normal sized changing bag or rucksack, and still have enough space for their favourite toy.
- 3 or 4 nappies
- 3 or 4 nappy bags
- 1 pack of baby wipes
- Changing mat – preferably a foldable one
- 1 bottle of hand sanitiser (especially important at the moment)
- At least one extra set of clothing
- A warm sweater or hoodie for the night-time
- A knitted hat or beanie to keep their ears warm in the evening
- A pair of kid’s sunglasses
- 1 bottle of waterproof sunscreen
- A set of sheets and a pillowcase – handy for those random naps that kids like to take
- A first aid kit is always a good idea to have, just in case
- A towel for each person in your family
- Snacks – such as nuts and dried fruits
When should we avoid going to the desert?
Morocco is a country of extreme temperatures, and the desert is a great example of this! In summer, the temperature can reach up to 40 degrees in the Sahara. In winter (usually January) it can drop dramatically and you may even see snow, which can not only close the high passes through the mountains, but cause unexpected delays and changes in travel plans as well.
Hopefully we have now convinced you that booking a marakech desert tour is just the thing for your next family luxury holiday. Find out more about the Morocco tours Hasina Morocco Tours offers by contacting us today.
