Marrakech
If you have never visited Morocco before, then you will want to include a visit to Marrakech – the exciting and lively city with a real buzz. The main focal point of the old town is the Djemma el-Fna – which really comes to life at nightfall, with acrobats, drummers, food sellers, story tellers and snake charmers giving it an electric atmosphere which can be quite a culture shock for some, but once you have got over the shock you will really enjoy it.
There are so many sites to see in Marrakech, that you should be careful not to overload your family by trying to do too much in one day. If you have young children who want to run and play, then head to either the Bahia or el Badhi palaces, or the Majorelle gardens which were designed by the late fashion designer Yves St Laurent.
The medina’s will probably take up a lot of your time, as the souks offer tonnes of stalls that will intrigue the whole family – and you can buy items such as lamps, rugs and even tea pots. You should make sure that you visit the spice market as well, as it is so interesting (and it has a great café too).
Atlas Mountains
If you really love the great outdoors then a trip to the Atlas Mountains is one that is not to be missed. Home to traditional Berber villages, dramatic scenery and verdant valleys – the beautiful and extensive Atlas Mountain range is about an hour away from Marrakech.
The High Atlas Mountains offer a range of fantastic trekking opportunities for walkers of all abilities and ages, including a trek up North Africa’s tallest peak Mount Toubaki – and the area is also home to many eye-catching rustic villages.
When you visit any of the villages in the Atlas Mountains, you will feel like you are stepping back in time, and are immersing yourself in the Morocco of the past where mules are the most common mode of transport and traditional Berber homes are dotted across the landscape.
The scenery in the Atlas mountains is also breath taking, with wildflowers covering the valley floors in springtime and snow dusting the tops in Winter. Whatever season you choose to visit the Atlas Mountains, however, you will be guaranteed spectacular views in every direction.
Atlantic Coast
You may not know this but Morocco also has a stunning coastline to the West of the country, with vast sandy beaches and large Atlantic waves all day long. The surf can be rough for really young children, however, so it is worth keeping a close eye on them.
The laid-back coastal town of Essaouira, and the area around it, is highly recommended for families as it has a gorgeous beach, a relaxed medina and a great café culture. Parents will love the relaxed bohemian feel and fresh fish on offer, while kids will love climbing the ramparts and playing games on the huge beach.
Another great option is Oualadia, with its blue coloured houses and sheltered lagoon beaches making it perfect for younger children, and also great for those who want to learn to surf in the summer months. The pace of life here is slow and unhurried, with colourful wooden boats shuttling tourists from beach to restaurant. Not for nothing is Oualadia known as the oyster capital of Morocco – with its plentiful array of beachfront shacks.
Sahara Desert
The Moroccon desert is the perfect way to give your kids a geography lesson that they will never forget – with its camels, palm trees and enormous sand dunes. It is packed full of UNESCO world heritage sites too, such as Alt Ben Haddou a crumbling citadel which has proved popular with many families over the years thanks to it featuring in the film Gladiator. The weather in Morocco is pretty sunny all year round, with a Mediterranean climate on the coast and in the North in the summer months. Spring and Autumn are also great times to visit, as it is still warm but not baking hot. Winter here is rarely cold, but you will get more rainfall than other times of the year.
The weather tends to get more extreme inland and in the south – the closer you get to the Sahara the hotter it gets in the summer and the cooler it gets in Winter.
