One of Hasina Morocco Tours most popular tours is our Fez and Sahara tour, as Fez is such a wonderful travel destination – so let us tell you why.

Fez is actually three separate cities melded into one:

Fes el Bali is the oldest part, founded in 789 by the Idrisi dynasty

Fez Jdid was added on in 1276 by the Marinid dynasty

The new Fez developed by the French during their colonial days between 1912 and 1956

The new Fez is definitely the largest part of the city, but this article is going to focus more on the first two areas – which are collectively known as the Medina of Fez.

Fes el Bali

Fes el Bali contains over 9000 narrow lanes, many of which have no names, so it is very easy to get lost here. This area is believed to be the world’s largest car-free urban area – which is a happy accident really as the lanes are too narrow for cars, rather than it being an actual environmental decision! If you do visit here on a morocco day tours then you are more likely to meet a donkey or mule than you are a vehicle.

Although the idea of 9000 lanes might sound daunting, it is actually a wonderful place to wonder as you never really know what you might see around the next corner. You might see a café or a tea shop, a traditional Moroccan house (a riad), a market or even an Islamic school – the list is endless.

One of the easiest places to find, and the most photographed, is the Chouara Tannery – the largest of the three main tanneries here containing lots of different coloured vessels containing the liquids used to cure the hides and the dyes used to colour them. You need to be prepared for the smell once you are here though, the liquids used to cure the hides include cattle urine and pigeon poo along with lime and water. The production process is entirely manual, and the Moroccans have been curing camel, cattle, goat and sheep hides this way for many years and producing the most beautiful products (but not the most beautiful smells).

Fes el Bali is also home the World’s oldest university, the University of al-Qarawiyyin which focuses mainly on the teaching of Islamic religious and legal topics and was originally a mosque. It delivers education to pupils of both genders from the ages of 13 to 30, and awards both high school certificates and University degrees.

Near to the University lies the shrine of Moulay Idriss II who was the ruler of Morocco from 807 to 828 and who many regard as the founder of Fez. The shrine, or zawiya, is a UNESCO world heritage site in its own right and one of the most sacred shrines in the whole of Morocco. If you are not a Muslim then you will not be allowed inside the building, but people of all faiths can walk around the outside and enjoy the decorated walls and ornate doors.

On the west side of the city is Kasbah An-Nouar – a fortress that dates from the 12th century. It is separated from the rest of the Medina by a wall and is entered through a gate named the Bab Chorfa. Bab Chorfa could be said to be an attraction in itself, as it is highly decorated and features two tall, eight sided towers.

Another sight not to be missed, is the 17th century Funduq al-Najjariyyin a traditional Moroccan travellers inn that is now home to a private museum of crafts and art, including antique furniture, and wooden works of art. The building itself is a sight to be seen, however, as it features a monumental entrance decorated with flowers and geometrical designs.

Fez Jdid

Although Fez Jdid is technically the newer part of the Medina, it is still over 700 years old. It tends to be quiter in this part of the city, than Fez el Bali but it is packed full of architectural detail for you to enjoy – if you know where to look.

There is the recently restored main gates, for example, of the Dar el Makzhen (Royal Palace) – although the palace itself is not open to the public. Another place worth visiting in Fez Jdid is the Jewish Quarter, the first Jewish quarter to be established in Morocco way back in 1438. It is home to a number of very important synagogues, including the Ibn Danan synagogue (established in the 17th century) and an active Jewish Cemetry.

Fez Jdid is also the best place in the whole of Fez to go shopping – in fact it is where the locals tend to head. Head to the Grande Rue de Fes El Jdid as all the markets and shops are centred here – it’s a great place to haggle for some spices, leather goods or clothing.

If the hustle and bustle of the shopping areas becomes too overwhelming and you want some time out, then head to the peaceful oasis that is Jnan Sbil, with its shaded paths and fountains. There are also several bird coops dotted about where doves and peacocks are bred.

If you really want to see how spectacular Fez really is, then head to the hills. The Marinid Tombs site to the north of the city is a great place to stand and just take it all in – especially at sunset.

You can visit Fez as part of one of Morocco tours, helping you experience the wonder of Morocco on your own private tour that is tailored to you.
